By Rachel Dorman, MSToday’s blog focuses on prevention of child maltreatment through a community-based approach, as recommended by the 2014 Prevention Resource Guide: Making Meaningful Connections. This guide was developed through collaboration between the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Children’s Bureau, the FRIENDS National Resource Center for Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention, and the Center for the Study of Social Policy. The resource guide adopts Strengthening Families and Youth Thrive’s five protective factors for young children and adds one additional factor, for a total of six protective factors. These six protective factors for young children are: nurturing and attachment, parental resilience, social connections, knowledge of parenting and child development, concrete support in times of need, and social-emotional competence of children. Through these protective factors the guide outlines recommendations for communities and individuals who work with families to prevent child maltreatment and promote well-being.[Flickr, 271 365-Death Toll Rises to 100; Number of Displaced People Up to Over 450,000 by Helga Weber, CC BY-ND 2.0] Retrieved on September 23, 2015The resource guide recommends that communities develop approaches to promote well-being through implementing protective factors. The first strategy of implementation that is recommended is a community café program, at which parents or community members can come together in an informal café environment to discuss concerns and share information about protective factors during a structured group discussion guided by questions. Another recommendation is for families to take the Strengthening Families self-assessment to identify areas a family can work together to strengthen their protective factors. Similarly, FRIENDS Protective Factors Survey is a recommended pre- and post-test for caregivers and agencies that are receiving child maltreatment training or services. The pre- and post-test will allow for agencies to measure improvement in implementation of the protective factors and provide feedback on how agencies can promote family protective factors. Lastly, the resource guide recommends for continuous learning and training through online resources. The online resources, such as FRIENDS Online Learning Center, provide tools and easily assessable around-the-clock education on implementing the protective factors.[Flickr, Psychiatric Help 5, by Ali Leila, CC BY-ND 2.0] Retrieved by September 23, 2015In conjunction with recommendations for communities, the resource guide provides suggestions for individuals working with families. These suggestions are categorized by each protective factor, and include background information on the protective factor. Each category has information for professionals working with children on how programs can help their agency, the community, and families. Also, each factor has a section where individuals are encouraged to engage and support parents through conversation; this section even includes suggested talking points. The 2014 Prevention Resource Guide: Making Meaningful Connections is a great tool that targets communities, while also providing resources for individuals. BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav on Sunday said detained mainstream leaders in Srinagar’s Centaur Hotel were sending messages “that gun was the only way out in Kashmir now”.“If you [politicians] want jobs for locals, fight for it and do politics on it. Do politics on early restoration of statehood. But don’t send secret messages from [the Centaur Hotel in] SKICC that “gun need to be picked up”. This is not politics. Let these politicians sacrifice first. But I must tell you, one call makes them shiver,” said Mr. Madhav, who presided over a party convention in Srinagar’s Tagore Hall.Over 40 mainstream leaders were arrested at the SKICC after August 5.Addressing the party workers, Mr. Madhav, also Kashmir in-charge, had terse message for the regional parties. “Some politicians want to play politics by connecting Article 370 with peoples’ sentiments. J&K is set on the path of peace and development now. Those who try to become stumbling block will be dealt with severely. If keeping 200-300 leaders behind the bars will maintain peace in J&K, let them be there for some time,” said Mr. Madhav. He was hinting at the arrests of National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah, NC vice president Omar Abdullah and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti. “Political process will start as and when situation improves. It has to restart,” Mr. Madhav said.Terming the fears of locals on losing land and jobs after revocation of J&K’s special status as ‘propaganda’, he said, “Where will jobs go? No such step will be taken. In fact, more jobs will be created. Utmost caution will be taken to ensure protection of culture, heritage, jobs for the youth and education for Kashmir’s residents,” he said. The situation was returning towards normalcy, he said. “There has been negligible violence this time. Earlier, small incidents would provoke violence. The common man wants peace in Kashmir. I reached the Srinagar venue late because Batamaloo area was chock-o-block, with people busy in their activities. Shops have to open. There should be no fear,” he said. The BJP said all Kashmiris were “sons of the soil” and equal citizens of India and would be treated with respect by people. “The politics practised in the last 70 years has come to an end. New administration will run on “sab ka saath, sab ka vikas”. This is the motto of the Modi government. Nepotism and family rule has been the main reason for violence and now new leadership is the need of the hour.,” he added. He said his party was ready for creation of new leadership.
A model and an aspiring Bollywood actor Gehna Vashisht was assaulted in Mumbai by some unknown social activists as she allegedly teamed up her bikini top with a tricolour wrapped around her waist. However, the incident that took place on Monday has now got a shocking twist as it turns out that the entire sequence was staged and the protesting activists were allegedly paid to attack Gehna. On the day of the supposed attack on Gehna, her publicist rounded up a few people loitering outside Oshiwara police station, including a woman identified as Shantabai Pawar, who lustily protested and even threw a few stones for a payment of Rs 300 for 5 minutes. The visuals accessed by Headlines Today show Shantabai and another man giving direction to the gathered crowd. Gehna’s car comes into view but zooms away as there were not enough people yet. The woman was heard talking to the man, who asks the starlet to come back a few minutes later when more protesters arrive. The group then composes itself. Gehna’s car returns to the spot a few minutes later and stops in front of the protestors without anybody obstructing its path. On cue, the protestors start hurling stones at the car. One man who breaks the rear windshield instinctively smacks his forehead in regret.Gehna, instead of staying put and driving away, which should have been her natural response had the attack been real, got out to meet the group.Shantabai then stepped forward and hectored her for violating the dignity of the national flag. After a while, Gehna got back into her car, making a show of wiping the blood from her chin where the stone had grazed her.Earlier, the little-known model had done a photo-shoot wearing a bikini and the national flag wrapped around her waist. The question now comes is who did Gehna shoot for. Was it meant from the beginning to be a publicity stunt? It could be mentioned that the donning of the national flag as a piece of clothing is punishable under Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act of 1971.advertisement
