Herrick previously was the boys’ coach at Cleveland High of Reseda and Hart High. He guided Cleveland to back-to-back City Section championships in 1981-82. Top three: David Cape, Joe Greiner and Casey Piper were the top three at last weekend’s Bakersfield Golf Tournament. Cape shot 142, Greiner – a freshman from Hart – 145 and Piper 147. “The course (at Bakersfield Country Club) was a little weird,” Piper said. “We didn’t know where to hit anything, but it didn’t really matter.” Nathan Brown, (818) 713-3607 [email protected] 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. College of the Canyons women’s basketball team faced a rigorous schedule early in the season, but it has reaped benefits during Western State Conference play. “Other coaches came up to me (during preseason) and asked me if I was crazy,” coach Greg Herrick said. Now it’s the Cougars (16-9 overall, 8-0 WSC) who are going crazy. They have won eight in a row since a 76-71 loss Dec. 28 to San Jose City at the Lady Jag Invitational. COC is averaging 94.8 points per game during its winning streak, more than 20 points per game better than second-place Citrus (70.9). The Cougars also have the stingiest defense – they’re allowing 48 per game in conference play.
