College of the Canyons women’s basketball team faced a rigorous schedule early in the season, but it has reaped benefits during Western State Conference play. “Other coaches came up to me (during preseason) and asked me if I was crazy,” coach Greg Herrick said. Now it’s the Cougars (16-9 overall, 8-0 WSC) who are going crazy. They have won eight in a row since a 76-71 loss Dec. 28 to San Jose City at the Lady Jag Invitational. COC is averaging 94.8 points per game during its winning streak, more than 20 points per game better than second-place Citrus (70.9). The Cougars also have the stingiest defense – they’re allowing 48 per game in conference play.
