If Garret Anderson’s back is sound enough for him to play left field, Scioscia can choose Juan Rivera or Casey Kotchman as his designated hitter. If Anderson can only DH, then Rivera will play left field. Against left-handed starters, Figgins will play center field and Robb Quinlan will play third base. Rivera and Anderson will fill the left field and designated hitter spots, based on Anderson’s health. Darin Erstad gave Adam Kennedy some good-natured ribbing before Sunday’s game by saying Kennedy asked for the day off so he could finish the season at .300. Kennedy, who did not ask for time off, finished the season 125 for 416. If he had pinch-hit and made an out Sunday, he still would have technically finished with a .300 average (.2998). Either way, Kennedy did not have the required 502 plate appearances to qualify as a league-leader. He finished with 455. We didn’t have (second baseman) Adam (Kennedy, knee surgery), or (left fielder) Jose (Guillen, suspended by team), (third baseman Dallas) McPherson was inexperienced. One of our best lineups was (Alfredo) Amezaga at second and (Chone) Figgins at third. I think we’re in better shape now than we had been at any point toward the end of last year.” Scioscia will put together his lineup in the playoffs similarly to how he lined them up in the final month of the regular season. ARLINGTON, Texas — The Angels are much more confident entering the playoffs this season compared to last season, when they were swept by the Boston Red Sox. Last season, the Angels clinched the division on the second-to-last day of the season. This time, they clinched with five games remaining, which allowed them to set up their pitching rotation and rest many regulars.
