Commentary by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Five Cueball and Quinn thoughts for Nov. 10, 2013…1. Some perspective…The older I get, the more I tire of politics, and the selfishness of it all. Liberals, Conservatives, Democrats, Republicans – they all sound like self-absorbed intolerant whiners.Unfortunately, such rancor seems to be seeping into the local lexicon. So was the case this week with the Susan’s Portrait studio parking lot debate. I was disappointed a few people were balking at something any business person would do, best position their business to succeed. In the wake of all the empty buildings in Wellington, it’s baffling to me anybody would protest anything that might help the local business climate. The reality is, business owner Susan Treft didn’t initiate getting a city loan to pay for a parking lot. According to Wellington City Code, any new business requires a hard surface (concrete or asphalt) parking lot. She was going to make it a gravel parking lot because a hard surface parking lot would cost in excess of $18,000. Essentially, she is borrowing to keep up with city standards. The debate should have been whether the city should require businesses to have a hard surface. Unfortunately, those throwing a fit decided to take it out on the small business owner. To his credit, Wellington City Council Gus Collins helped Susan with financing which she will pay back in 10 payments. If you think this is abnormal, then perhaps a reality pill is needed. Home owners in new developments are assessed special taxes by the municipality for newly paved streets and utilities. That’s only been done for like… forever.Nevertheless, even if you think government should not be involved with private business, the system is place to do so. If you are a business owner why should you not take advantage of the various means available?By the same token, shouldn’t we the community of Wellington give Susan the benefit of the doubt? As a professional photographer, I know very well just how highly Susan Treft is respected in the professional photography world. Photographers from across the state of Kansas come to her for her expertise. She teaches a class annually at the Kansas Professional Photographers Association summer school held for a week in Newton. In the digital world, no industry has been annihilated like the photography business. Last I counted, there were over 25 people in Sumner County, who were trying to make some money off their digital cameras. The fact that Susan is building a new studio is testimony just how good of photographer and business woman she really is and what an asset she is to Wellington. How many people have come into Wellington over the past 20 years from say Winfield, Wichita, Andale, Timbuktu to get their portraits taken while in the process getting a bite to eat and shopping a little in the process? Susan’s Portraits for years have contributed to the community’s sales tax revenue base. It is not only good that the Wellington City Council help her out, it should be mandatory.Wellington, you can’t have it both ways. We either make this community a pro-business friendly environment and help our local businesses, or we let this town decay. If we can’t help a small business person succeed in this corporate dominated world, then we have lost focus of what living in a small community such as Wellington is all about. It’s about helping one another. Quinn McCue5. Quinn’s thoughts… WHS Student Section at football games.4. Shout out of the week…  My shout out this week goes to the Wellington student section and the band who were absolutely fabulous at the Wellington High School football games this year. Come to think of it, a special shootout goes out to Sam Wylie for bringing us a new Crusader and Thunder the horse to the games. And good job to the WHS football team for giving us fans a winning record for the first time since 2009. And let’s not forget about the great seasons the Wellington Cross Country, girls tennis and girls volleyball teams had. When you look back at the fall sports season, it was a pretty good year to be a Crusader. Hi it’s Quinn and due to popular request here are my thoughts! 4. I like bunnies. Their so cute and fat.We have bunnies at the Wellington Middle school after school program.center_img 2. I’ve made banana muffins yesterday and 2 hours later they were all gone. Quinn Master Baker! 1. Pokemon: I’ve had a strange addiction to Pokemon white. It’s really fun and some of the Pokemon are so cute. 3. Obamacare headaches…President ObamaWow this Obamacare — or Affordable Healthcare Act for the political correct — has gotten off to a terrible start. Not only is the Obamacare registration website not been working properly and our former governor Kathleen Sebelius, now U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary, is under fire for gross negligence, but some people are getting their current health insurance policies canceled. If you don’t believe me, get on Facebook and see the rancor of those who learned that their current health coverage has been canceled because it doesn’t fit with the requirements of Obamacare.Wasn’t this new healthcare plan supposed to give people more healthcare coverage not less?I’m reserving judgment on whether Obamacare is actually good for healthcare. My wife, who knows a little about medicine, isn’t so sure herself. But there’s no doubt the initial implementation of this program has been a complete disaster. And there is still this thing that proponents can’t seem to answer about how the heck are we going to pay for Obamacare considering our deficit is in the trillions and we are having a hard time funding Social Security and Medicare now especially with all you hippy baby boomers reaching retirement age. 2. Bullying…The Wellington school board members, some who have been known to do a little bullying themselves, should pay careful attention what is going on with the Miami Dolphins. An NFL lineman, Richie Incognito, is accused of bullying another offensive lineman Jonathan Martin and it became a major issue last week for the Miami Dolphin organization. What has ensued is a national controversy that looked eerily similar to a situation we had in Wellington a few weeks earlier. It could result in several firings throughout the Dolphin management.Wellington school district needs to take an aggressive approach in not only implementing its anti-bullying policies it established a few years ago, but educate its teachers, students and parents on the dangers of bullying – especially in the social media.I liked what Circle High Schools did the other day. They had an assembly for parents, students, teachers and administrators addressing the problem with social media and bullying. The saying goes an ounce of prevention is better than a ton of cure is applicable here. Social media and bullying education should be as mandatory as drug and sex education. Close Forgot password? Please put in your email: Send me my password! There’s a big diff, by the way, between organized shooting at photos of coaches/vilifying a dead kid and his family and – say – whatever pro-football players do to each other.
