over 50000 kids all over Indiahas blasted All India Football Federation’s commercial partners IMG-Reliance’s idea of having a three-month league similar to the IPL Excerpts from an interview: What’s your take on the IPL-style franchise football model that is being proposed for Indian football It’s complete nonsense as it will never work Football is totally different to cricket and as such to get the best players in the world to play will never happen The game of football shouldn’t be embarrassed with such ideas Will getting retired foreign players boost the popularity of Indian football What do you think It will have an impact to start but long term people will lose interest Bring the old players in to mentor and coach kids That would be more beneficial Is playing for three months a year as a professional footballer enoughas proposed by the IMG-Reliance tournament Not at a professional level I’m not keen with split leagues as it can lead to problems with the aiff and FIFA just look at what happend to Indonesia 1 league over at least 8 months is the most tried and tested format and works Why do people want to mess around with it From a broadcaster and presenter point of viewhow do you view I-League Is it possible to get prime time slot of the tournament to attract more eyeballsand subsequently more sponsorsas the AIFF hopes It is but not if the stupid ideas like above get implemented It is down to the football and the quality of the football and that will take time to develop and growbut there is no reason why the I league can’t be as big as the EPL some dayin terms of viewership Instead of aping the European or American modelsdo you think it is wise that India looks atfor egJapanese model to succeed It would need to involve the major corporate company’s to come in and support clubs This question is a double-edged sword because there are pros and cons to both but the Japanese model involves huge external investment whereasas daft as this soundsin Europe you can form a team with nothing and develop it to a club and make the professional ranks within a few years In Japan you have to ‘buy in’ There’s a big difference How big a step would hosting U-17 World Cup be for India India managed to put on a great Commonwealth Games in 2010 so hosting this event wouldn’t be an issue The only problemwhich is the same in any country hosting a major football eventis the infrastructure Get that right and you will have have a brilliant showcase event European football nowhow do you view the Luis Suarez transfer saga Is he worth the 40 million that Liverpool are demanding No one is worth that sort of moneybut if people want to pay that then it’s up to them He is a quality player but as can be seen he does have his flaws and occasionally let’s himself down by doing stupid things But I think you can’t get that out of a player There is a fine line between genius and insanity and I believe that Suarez falls into this category With the top three EPL sides from last season – Manchester UnitedCity and Chelsea – having new managershow will it change the dynamics It will be a big change but everyone is professional – from the staff to players and they will just carry on with their jobs The dynamics change because of the managers that is where things will get interesting Does it give Jose Mourinho an advantage as he has been at that position before and experienced the pressure more than David Moyes and Pellegrini No Moyes has been there for years so he knows the EPL inside-out As for PelligriniI’m not convinced with him He was given fortunes to spend at Real Madrid and couldn’t deliver So I think he will not be a success This season the title is Chelsea’s to lose and yes that is because of one reason: ‘The Special One’ Can Lionel Messi and Neymar work well togetherAsk me in 12 months time I have my reservations about Neymar as he isn’t yet tried and tested in Europe It’s totally different to anything he has experienced He will need time to settle in to the team Messi is tried and tested and is the best player in the world by a million miles so I would have to take Messi every day of the week So farwhich has been the transfer of the season for you I don’t think it has happened yetespecially in the EPL But when you see the silly amounts of money being spent on the likes of Cavanni and FalcaoI think that the game has gone a little crazy this year Lukaku is almost like a new signing for Chelsea after being away on loan last year and Benteke resigning for Aston Villa is huge as wellconsidering he wanted to leave It’s not just about bringing players in its about keeping them as well For all the latest Delhi News download Indian Express App More Top NewsWritten by Express News Service | Pune | Published: September 22 2013 Roger Federer has gone more than six months without having a title to his name (Source: AP) Top News All it took was “one stupid move” for Roger Federer’s season to fall into an abyss For much of his career the seven-times Wimbledon champion had been blessed with a body that seemed bullet-proof against the aches pains and injuries suffered by most top athletes But one false move by the man usually known for his gliding footwork while running a bath for his six-year-old twin daughters sparked a chain of bad luck that has left Federer in a situation that is completely alien to him For the first time since 2000 the 17-times grand slam champion who required surgery on his left knee in February to repair a torn meniscus arrived at Wimbledon without winning a title in the first six months of the year “I was very very sad just because I thought I was going to be lucky not having to do surgery in my career I was doing so well all of last year” the Swiss third seed who reached the Wimbledon and US Open finals last year told reporters on Saturday “I was great at the Australian Open Felt good throughout” added Federer who was beaten by world number one Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals “After that everything changed “The next day one stupid move the season’s been completely different than what I expected it to be” Coming into grasscourt major last year Federer had won four titles with a 34-6 win-loss record from 10 tournaments Twelve months on and the 34-year-old has played only six events in 2016 and his 16-6 win-loss record will raise doubts about his ability to last five sets in a season beset with injury and illness Not only did the knee surgery throw a curve ball into the season Federer has also been laid low with a viral illness and he was forced to pull out of the French Open with a back injury “Going into surgery was difficult That’s when it hit me” said Federer whose absence from Roland Garros ended a streak of appearing in a record 65 consecutive grand slam tournaments “I got really disappointed and sad about it because that’s when I understood what the road was going to look like” While the back injury was a nuisance the enforced absence from Paris allowed Federer to concentrate on his favourite time of the season and he played an extra grasscourt tournament in Stuttgart in addition to his traditional Wimbledon warm-up in Halle “I felt I had to stop everything by not playing Paris… just reset from there and make another push for Wimbledon which was great” said Federer who was sporting a white t-shirt emblazoned with a red double-decker bus sandwiched between SW19 lettering “This back has won me 88 titles so I’m okay with that back It’s okay if it messes around with me sometimes” he added “That’s why the decision not playing Paris was very easy to take because it was for Wimbledon it was for the rest of the season it was for my life it was for the rest of my career” For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More
