first_img Login/Register With: Stories of fractured relations, desperate acts and Hollywood ambition top our 16th annual “Chasing the Buzz” poll of the most keenly awaited movies at the Toronto International Film Festival, which runs Sept. 8 to 18.Kenneth Lonergan’s potent family reckoning Manchester by the Sea, Oscar-tipped since its Sundance premiere in January, took a leading three votes from the Star’s 30-member panel of critics, programmers, professors and regular film buffs.Four other films took two votes apiece: Damien Chazelle’s Tinseltown musical reverie La La Land, with the glittering pairing of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone; Barry Jenkins’ culturally and sexually fraught drama Moonlight; Zacharias Kunuk’s Maliglutit (Searchers), a retelling of John Ford’s classic revenge western The Searchers; and Mathieu Denis’ and Simon Lavoie’s Quebec terrorist doc/drama hybrid Those Who Make Revolution Halfway Only Dig Their Own Graves.
