UNDER CONSTRUCTION WHS Gym Floor Finally Getting Replaced Closed Until October

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — School Superintendent Dr. Glenn Brand recently announced that  the gym floor at Wilmington High School is currently being replaced.“[The gym] is under construction,” said Brand. “Work has more than begun in terms of removing the old floor and steps towards installing the new floor.”Brand noted the Athletic Department is working around the construction project.“Volleyball is the only affected sport,” noted Brand. “And, [thankfully], most physical education classes this time of the year are outside.”The original floor, installed during the construction of the building in 2014, has “never been right,” according to many familiar with the situation.“In the early summer months of 2015, [the DPW] identified floor panels in some locations were crimping, particularly in the center of the floor,” Town Manager Jeff Hull explained. “[The floor] continued to maintain an unevenness, which led the town to pursuing the issue further with the designers and contractor… Ultimately, their recommendation was to bring in dehumidifiers and fans, which we did. These had some measure of effect, but the floor wouldn’t settle back down until the fall. These circumstances have continued now for the last few years.”In May, Hull announced the town would likely be going to mediation with the contractor to resolve the situation. At that time, the town went out to bid for the floor replacement project, receiving three bids ranging from $219,200 to $268,666.Last week, Hull announced that the town was able to successfully negotiate a resolution with Gilbane Company, the building project’s contractor, which will be picking up 80% of the costs.“Gilbane agreed to pay $175,000 towards replacement of the gym floor. The Town is paying the remaining $44,200, the lowest bid price ($219,200) from a firm qualified to perform the work,” Hull told Wilmington Apple.According to Superintendent Brand, the floor replacement project is anticipated to be completed sometime in October.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook.
